Hi all. My name is Denny Bradley and I have been elected by the Iowa Bowhunters Association Board of Directors to be the new President. First of all, I would like to thank Terry Koppes and all previous Presidents and all board members, past and present, for their time and dedication. I have been on the board since 2003, presently serving on the legislative and raffle committees. This year will be my 35th year of bowhunting. I live just south of Ottumwa. I am a Pope & Young Measurer, past Bowhunter Ed Instructor, Past Board member and Recording Secretary of the IBA Foundation (grants money for Iowa Archery in the Schools), Board member Iowa Conservation Alliance (ICA), NWTF member, RMEF member, Izaak Walton member and past board member of our local Wapello Chief’s Bowmen archery club.
As with all past presidents, I would like to see an increase in membership. There is no reason I can think of for any Iowa bowhunter not to be a member. It seems the only time some folks make noise is after something has already been lost. Too late! This hunting privilege is not guaranteed by any constitution. If you know of possible members, let them know what the IBA has done for them in the past (Archery only during the rut, No hunter orange for bowhunters, Award programs, began the highly successful Iowa Archery in The Schools program, Spring Banquet, Fall Festival, and contributions to many deserving causes around Iowa, just to name a few things) and what needs to be done for the future of bowhunting. We have several issues that need addressed. The CWD threat is going to be with us for a long time. Deer numbers are lower than they have been since the early to mid 1990s because of overharvest the last 3 seasons and the EHD epidemic that many of us have endured. There are other organizations that won’t be happy until all deer are eliminated. We need to keep crossbows out of the archery season except for the disabled hunters. When we deal with these issues at the Statehouse, there are generally 2 to 4 of us to present our views. The reason some legislation does not go forward is because the Senators and Representatives don’t hear from their constituents. That would be you folks. We will need the help and support of our membership as well as the Legislative Committee and our Lobbyist. Google “Iowa Legislator contacts” to get the contact information of your legislators by simply inputting your address. Most of them have local forums on occasion. Personal contact is best but letters, e-mail and phone calls are also effective. Be respectful when contacting them.
Enough for now.
